Dog in Ohio Caught in Leghold and Shot

A male, golden retriever (named Chance by rescuers) in Lorain, Ohio was found with a leghold trap attached to his front foot and a gunshot wound in his rear leg. Due to an infection in his rear leg, it will have to be amputated. Chance will definitely lose one toe and may also lose others due to the trauma from the leghold trap. This is business as usual for most trappers who dislike feral dogs and see them as deserving of the same treatment that is given to coyotes. Luckily this dog was found by a good Samaritan and taken to a local veterinarian. A GoFundMe page was started to raise money for the surgeries and has raised $7,955 in just three days! The goal for the fund was $5,000. Any additional money will go toward helping other dogs like Chance.

As long as traps are allowed on public land, we will continue to see more stories like this. There is no such thing as a “safe” or “humane” trap. They are injurious by their very nature and these are the results of animals that are caught in them.

Tens of thousands of animals every year, including foxes, coyotes, wolves, skunks, raccoons and others are subjected to the same fate as Chance. When will we as a country decide that we will no longer tolerate animals to be treated this way?
