Senator Looks to End Hunting, Trapping in State Parks

MADISON, Wis. (AP) – A Democratic state senator has drawn up a pair of bills that would ban hunting and limit the types of mechanisms trappers can use in state parks.

Sen. Fred Risser of Madison says park visitors shouldn’t have to worry about being shot and trapping is inhumane. One bill would ban hunting in the parks completely. The other would outlaw steel-jawed traps, body-gripping raps and snares.

Republicans passed a law in 2012 allowing hunting and trapping on state park properties. The statutes allows the Department of Natural Resources to prohibit both practices within 100 yards of a designated use area to protect public safety or a unique animal or plant.

The bills have little chance of going anywhere. Republicans control both legislative houses as well as the governor’s office.
