The Living Legacy of Yellowstone’s 1090F
For nearly twelve winters, 1090F has carried Yellowstone’s wolf story—a mother, leader, and survivor whose life reveals resilience and fragile connections.
In Yellowstone, winter is an editor. Snow closes old trails, wind erases yesterday’s tracks, and entire lives can disappear into the white without ceremony. Yet for nearly twelve years, one wolf has continued to leave her mark across this landscape.
She is known as 1090F.
That number allows researchers to follow her life, but it cannot contain it. It does not tell us that she has been a daughter, mother, leader, wanderer, and returning matriarch. It cannot describe the pups she raised, the companions she lost, the winter she traveled alone, or the family she eventually found her way back to.
By early 2026, 1090F was approaching twelve years of age, making her the oldest known living wolf in Yellowstone and one of the longest-lived wolves documented in the park. Most Yellowstone wolves die much younger, their lives shaped by disease, territorial conflict, injury, hunger, human-caused mortality, and the demands of hunting large prey through severe winters.
To grow old in the wild is never guaranteed. For 1090F, it has meant surviving those risks season after season. Yet her importance lies not only in the length of her life, but in everything that life carries.
A Living Link to Wolf Restoration
1090F was born in 2014 into Mollie’s pack, whose lineage reaches back to the first year of Yellowstone’s wolf restoration.
In 1995, wolves from Canada were transported into the park, returning a species people had deliberately eliminated from Yellowstone decades earlier. The original Crystal Creek wolves became the foundation of what would eventually become Mollie’s pack.
The pack was later named for Mollie Beattie, then director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and an important advocate for wolf restoration. Beattie helped carry the crate containing 5F, the first wolf transported into the park. More than three decades later, a pack bearing her name still moves through Yellowstone, and an elderly female from that lineage still helps hold it together.
The howl returned before 1090F was born, but through her and Mollie’s pack, it continues.
That lineage was shaped in one of Yellowstone’s most demanding landscapes. After the original Crystal Creek wolves were displaced from the prey-rich northern range, they established themselves in and around Pelican Valley. Many elk leave the valley during winter, forcing wolves to travel farther for food or confront something far more dangerous: bison.
A mature bison may weigh many times more than a wolf, and one horn, charge, or well-placed kick can kill instantly. Yet Mollie’s pack became known for regularly confronting and killing these powerful animals. Such hunts require patience, coordination, judgment, and extraordinary nerve.
By learning to hunt prey far larger and more dangerous than themselves, Mollie’s wolves demonstrated the adaptability, cooperation, and shared knowledge that allow wolf families to persist in difficult landscapes. 1090F became part of that unfolding history, carrying forward behaviors forged in Pelican Valley and passed between generations.
Her story is not only one of individual endurance. It is also the story of a family learning how to survive.
Mother, Leader, Survivor
Wolf populations must be counted, but numbers alone cannot describe the families behind them. Packs are shaped by individual relationships, shared experience, and enduring social bonds—and 1090F’s life reveals how deeply those bonds matter.
In 2021, while leading Mollie’s pack, she gave birth to four pups. The following year, she produced seven more. But 2022 also brought upheaval. Leadership changed, the family fractured, and the young wolves became separated from their mother. Their eventual fates became uncertain.
Annual reports can summarize such events in a few lines: pups born, leadership changed, pack dispersed. The facts are precise, but they cannot fully convey the disruption behind them.
We cannot know exactly how a wolf experiences separation or loss. Yet decades of observation have shown that wolves form lasting social bonds, cooperate in raising young, and depend heavily upon family structure. Their lives are interconnected, and the loss of one individual can affect the entire group.
By early 2023, 1090F was no longer Mollie’s dominant female. Later that year, she left with former leader 1272M and an uncollared black wolf. The three traveled together for a time before separating. After moving beyond Yellowstone, 1272M was killed during Montana’s wolf-hunting season.
By the end of the year, observers were seeing 1090F alone.
For an aging wolf, traveling without a pack meant facing Yellowstone without the cooperation upon which wolves so often depend. Securing food and avoiding rivals became more difficult, while even a minor injury could prove fatal. Yet she endured.
In 2024, Mollie’s pack entered another period of instability. Members disappeared, dominant wolves were lost, and the group scattered before gradually coming together again.
At the center of that re-forming family was 1090F. The wolf who had once led the pack, lost her position, left, and traveled alone returned to Mollie’s and again became its leading female.
What One Wolf Carries
An old wolf is a biological rarity and a living memory moving across the land.
Over nearly twelve years, 1090F has encountered shifting pack boundaries, severe winters, dangerous hunts, rival wolves, and the loss of familiar companions. She has occupied several roles within the same family and lived long enough to connect generations of Mollie’s pack.
Experience matters in the lives of social animals. An older wolf may carry knowledge younger animals have not yet had time to acquire: where prey moves during difficult seasons, where neighboring territories begin, when to press an attack, and when the danger is too great.
When an experienced wolf dies, another may eventually occupy her territory or assume her role. But replacement is not continuity. Relationships change, families reorganize, and years of accumulated experience disappear with the individual who carried them.
Numbers can tell us whether a population is growing or declining but they cannot fully describe the value of a particular relationship, the stability of a family, or the consequences of losing an experienced mother or leader.
A wolf may count as one animal in a population estimate, but within a pack, no wolf is merely one.
Learning the story of 1090F allows us to glimpse a world that population estimates alone cannot reveal, a world of inherited knowledge, shifting relationships, cooperation, loss, and survival. It reminds us that every management decision reaches beyond a single animal, touching families, generations, and the ecological communities of which they are a part.
We may never fully know the world as 1090F experiences it. But knowing even part of her story helps us understand what is at stake.
Conservation should do more than ensure that the minimum number of wolves remain present on the landscape. It should preserve the possibility of lives like hers: lives long enough to gather experience, shape families, carry history forward, and become part of a place.
